We approach learning from a systematic and scientific perspective focused directly on the learner.

 

Our Approach

Underlying our work at Epsilon is a systematic approach to learning and learning design, with a consistent focus on the nature of learning and the needs of the learner. We employ the scientific method as the basis of our thinking and apply empirically validated findings in the construction of meaningful, contextualized learning solutions.

We utilize systems thinking as our framework for dealing with complex matters in a holistic manner. We envision an assembly of system components as an organized whole that includes both relationships between internal elements and interactions with the external environment. Analyses of processes, inputs, and outputs are applied beyond just software and hardware technology, as they also serve to clarify human and organizational systems. In this way we develop integrative solutions that span technological, educational, and organizational needs.

Any theoretical thinking we bring to bear on a problem is founded on a logically coherent and consistent Learning Systems Theory based on scientifically verifiable findings. This includes recent results from the field of cognitive neuroscience as well as theories of education based on controlled experimentation (e.g., Cognitive Load Theory). Any propositions or conclusions we reach follow logically by way of deduction from established definitions and empirically verifiable results.

Ours is an applied approach that insists on demonstrable results that are measurable in some real way. The solutions we develop include clear metrics or indicators that ensure both the definition and the measure of success.

Our consulting practice is based on mutually agreed upon criteria that define success according to our client's goal. Consultation begins with analysis of the organizational context and need. We work with you to make explicit the gap between your current situation and your desired goal — working directly with organizational stakeholders to formulate and express both the problem and the solution in the terms or language of your organization. We also ensure that our clients have the information and/or resources required to implement solutions in a sustainable manner.

Last and foremost, our approach is focused on the nature of learning and the needs of the learner. Our aim is to enable people to learn precisely what they need, when they need it, and in the manner that is most effective for themselves.
